Bio
Mohamed Tawfik (born 1956) is a prominent Egyptian career diplomat, civil engineer, and novelist who frequently publishes fiction under the name M. M. Tawfik. While his primary vocation is that of fiction writer, M.M. Tawfik has pursued a career in diplomacy from 1983 to 2016, during which he represented Egypt in numerous negotiations and conferences in the fields of disarmament, labour and human rights. From September 2012 to August 2015, a period of profound transformation for his country and region, Mohamed Tawfik served as Egypt’s Ambassador to the United States.
A member of the Egyptian Writers Union, Pen International, the Geneva Writers Group and ACT Writers of Australia, he has conducted creative writing workshops since 1999. He is literary editor of arabworldbooks.com, an online magazine. He has chaired, or been a member of, several juries for major literary awards.
Stories from his first three collections, The White Butterflies (1995), Till the Break of Dawn, and Agamyste (both in 1997) have appeared in English translation titled The Day the Moon Fell (1998). His most recent short story collection, Stone Flower, was published in 2023.
His trilogy of novels; A Night in the Life of Abdel-Tawab Tutu(1996), A Naughty Boy Called Antar (2003), and Candygirl (2010), is an epic work that follows Egypt’s political and social evolution through the twentieth century and the first years of the twenty-first.
The last two novels were translated in English by the author. The first was published in 2008 as Murder in the Tower of Happiness while the second Candygirl was published in 2012 under the same title.
More recently, his novel The Scorpion’s Whisper (2021) was included in the long list for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction.
His most recent novel Rendez-vous With Clooney appeared in 2026.
