Bio
Born in 1941, Amb Sudhir T. Devare joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1964 and served in India’s missions in Moscow, Washington D.C., Gangtok ( Sikkim), Geneva, and Rangoon.
He served as a Joint Secretary, MEA dealing with key neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Myanmar. He was Ambassador to South Korea from 1985-89; served as India’s first Ambassador to Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia from 1992 to 94 soon after the disintegration of the Soviet Union and later served as Ambassador to Indonesia.
As a Secretary in the Ministry, from 1998 to 2001, he was closely associated with the evolution and implementation of India’s Look East policy. He also oversaw India’s growing relationship with South Korea and Southeast Asia.
He was also a Visiting Professor at Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was a Member of National Security Advisory Board from 2001-03 and had teaching assignments at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore, Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Symbiosis International University.
He is at present chairman of Research Advisory Council, Research and Information System (RIS) for Developing Countries, and Society for Indian Ocean Studies, New Delhi.
He has authored two books India and Southeast Asia: towards Security Convergence and the latest Through a Diplomat’s Lens: Capturing Momentous Times which was published earier this year. He has also edited four books.
