Bio
Thomas Sehested is a Danish historian and former cultural diplomat. Since the publication of his book Indien – verdens næste stormagt, (India – the World’s Next Great Power) in 2010, he has become a frequent commentator on Indian affairs in the Danish media.
Together with Indian partners, he has worked as a consultant on branding and communications for a range of Indian companies, including Wipro, the Aditya Birla Group, and Welspun. Thomas was a member of the board of the Indian Danish Chamber of Commerce (IDCC) from 2015 to 2023 and a member of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Expert Group on India from 2016 to 2019.
He served as Director of the Danish Cultural Institute in India from 2018 to 2021 and as president of EUNIC India, the network of European cultural institutes in India, in 2020.
Since 2023, he has headed the Next Step India project, helping Danish SMEs and start-ups establish a foothold in India.
Since 2021, he has been responsible for content on India at Lex.dk, Denmark’s national encyclopaedia. Thomas also serves as an adviser to INDK, a symphonic collaboration between India and Denmark.
His first book in 1995 was in Danish roughly titled in English as How Denmark’s aid to Norway – the biggest Danish humanitarian aid ever could happen during the Second World’s Nazi occupation. He was the co-editor of A Danes guide to everything Denmark.
He is a co-author of the recently published Foreign Policy and Identity which explains how national identities and narratives forms foreign policies – with USA, China, EU, Russia and India as cases.
